Angeal x Zack
I thought I'd wake up the community a bit since it's been *very* quiet lately... Written for amarissia and posted with her enthusiastic permission. ^^
Fandom: FFVII CC
Pairing(s): None – Angeal, Zack, Genesis
Warning: sadness, inner conflict
Word count: 517
Summary: Angeal looks back…
“Angeal? Angeal!” Zack’s clear, youthful voice echoed through the woods.
Angeal stood silent, unmoving between the trees. He dared not even breathe deeply, for fear that Zack would hear him. After all, the young SOLDIER’s senses were as keen as his own.
Considering what Genesis had revealed to Angeal weeks ago, there was really no other choice. He had to leave. ShinRa, because it was the root of the whole thing. Zack, because Angeal could not live with himself if he inadvertently harmed his young student and lover.
Bright orange light flashed through the woods, followed by Zack’s startled cry. Then silence.
“What the hell…? You sent a summons!” Angeal rounded on Genesis, who was approaching his friend from behind.
“Don’t worry. He can deal with it,” Genesis soothed.
“I’m not letting him face an Ifrit on his own!” Angeal grimly loosened the big sword on his back and turned towards where the summons twirled and blinked through the trees. ”I’m going back!” A slim hand on his arm stopped him.
“Don’t. If you go out there, if you help him, you’ll put him in more danger than just fighting an Ifrit will. Remember what we talked about,” Genesis let his words trail off, his voice implying terrible consequences.
And Angeal remembered. All those papers, all those scientific reports, all saying the same thing: that they – he, Genesis, Sephiroth – didn’t even *deserve* to be called human. That they were nothing but monsters: the results of a scientists playing Goddess. Made, designed, put together at a whim, like children’s building blocks. Who knew what else they were capable of, aside from the abilities that they had already shown in their time as SOLDIERs? What evil waited deep inside of them, inside of Angeal, ready to break out and wreak havoc on family, friends, fellow SOLDIERs and lovers at any moment?
Fighting with himself, Angeal strained against his friend’s hold and the burning ache in his heart. Then he dropped his hand from the grip of his sword and inclined his head. His dark hair fell forward, hiding tightly closed eyes. He’d made his decision, long before he had come on this mission to Wutai together with Zack. He had known that he would be standing here, ready to leave everything that he loved and knew behind forever.
But knowing and doing were two very different things.
“Sephiroth is coming,” Genesis murmured, dropping his hand from Angeal’s arm. “We have to leave.”
Angeal raised anguish filled, glowing green eyes, and looked back out at the path, where brilliant orange light continued to proclaim that Zack had not yet defeated the summon’s inhabitant.
“Live, Zack,” Angeal murmured. “Live and grow and prosper. And one day, you will forget all about the person who betrayed you. Forget me.” He swallowed quickly, pushing down the sorrow that threatened overwhelm him. And ignoring the tearing pain shredding his heart to ribbons, Angeal turned and followed Genesis into darkness.
